The Methven - Mt Hutt region is the Adventure centre of the Ashburton District, with activities and adventures to suit all ages and fitness levels.
Golf Courses
There are two within easy reach of Green Gables, the closest is Methven which is planted with a beautiful selection of trees and shrubs and has spectacular mountain views. It is one of NZ’s finest 18 hole country courses.

Just over the Rakaia River is the 18 hole championship course of Terrace Downs which is rated one of the top three in NZ. Set against a wild and rugged backdrop with ever changing mountain views, it may be difficult to keep your eyes on the ball.

Hot air ballooning
Hot Air Ballooning starts from Methven and slides majestically over some of the most spectacular views of the Canterbury plains from the Southern Alps, the Rakaia River and out to the sea. You may even catch a view of the snow capped Mount Cook.
Scenic Walks
Rakaia Gorge walkway traverses the edge of the Rakaia River and has amazing views of the river and surrounds. You can take a jet boat up the river and walk back.

Awa Awa Rata Reserve at the base of Mt Hutt Forest is great for a picnic or barbeque. It also has a variety of walks including a 10 minute stroll around the Spring flowering Rhododendrons, a short walk through part of the surrounding Mountain Beech forest with its abundance of bird life or a 4.5 km tramp which takes you above the bush-line where you can see great views of the Canterbury Plains and foothills – right to the ocean on a clear day.

Sharplin Falls are a must to visit. The track starts from the Sharplin Scenic Reserve near Staveley and takes you through native bush and forest to the twin falls.

Methven Walkways
Methven Walkway is 11kms long. It winds through dense trees, over footbridges and open paddocks, and along the banks of the Rangitata Diversion Stream where there are unimpeded views of the Southern Alps. You can complete the loop and return to Methven village or take an additional walk to the Ashburton River. This is also popular with mountain bikers as Mt Hutt Forest is close by for further trails.
Mt Somers
For the more discerning hiker there are the sub-alpine tracks of Mt Somers. Woolshed Creek is the starting point and the walkway is rated as one of the top ten walks in NZ. Other tracks to try are Mt Winterslow, Alford, Harper, Potts and Taylor, to name but a few.

Mt Sunday ‘Eldoras’ the mythical city in the Lord of the Rings trilogy whose location is set in the unspoilt and remote high country. Experience the breathtaking alpine scenery with sparkling clear lakes and rugged mountain ranges. Pick up the guided tour in Methven and spend a day, including lunch, and get the feel of the whole film location site.
Washpen Falls are situated within a unique volcanic canyon which is covered with a variety of South Island bush and forest. As well as native birds and plants there are extensive views of the Canterbury Plains. The walk takes approximately 2 hours and bookings are required.

Eco Tours operate from Sharplin Falls, Mt Hutt, Mt Somers and many more location where you will discover some of our unique fauna and flora with plenty of chance for tramping and photography. Discover the magical beech forests and hear the native bird-life.

Lake Coleridge, so close but a world away, is a long glacier lake surrounded by soaring mountains and tussock covered hills. It is the site of the first large scale hydro-electric project in NZ. Take a drive to the Lake and sit and experience the tranquillity or walk a while beside the glacial blue water.

Jet boating up the spectacular Rakaia Gorge, either at a peaceful relaxed pace or at an exhilarating speed to wake up your senses.
River rafting
Three hours of incredible River Rafting at Peel Forest on the premium white water rafting Rangitata River. Minimum numbers do apply but there is rafting at all water levels.

Horse Trekking in the Foothills with native bush views, the mountains and the Canterbury Plains or through tussock country and farmland out to the Rakaia Gorge where you have outstanding views of the mountains and the opal coloured waters of the Rakaia River.

Trout and Salmon Fishing
Trout and Salmon Fishing Sea- run salmon can be found up-river on the Rakaia river between November and March. There is also fishing on Ashburton and Rangitata rivers and the high country Lakes of Heron, Roundabout, Emma, Camp and Clearwater. These lakes are the perfect place for Brown and Rainbow Trout.
Skydiving Freefall at 200 kph and descend thousands of feet into breathtaking scenery.

Mountain Biking close to home is the Methven Walkway which follows the Rangitata Diversion Stream, where you can cycle to Methven village or as far as Mt.Somers.


There are options for all, anything from scenic tracks to downhill forest runs and amazing hill country terrain trails.

Hertitage Trails The first station appeared in the area in 1853. Methven itself was established in 1879. Early relics and those of the surrounding area can be found at the local Museums in Methven, Staveley and Mt Somers.

Ashburton also has the Vintage Car museum and the Plains Railway and Historical Village featuring a working vintage railway.
